Archival Foundations

Every work begins with heavy archival paper, chosen for its texture and ability to absorb the patient ink without bleed. This meticulous selection ensures the longevity and integrity of each dot.

4. Practical tips

  • Test your pen's actual dot size on scrap of the same substrate — paper absorbency changes effective dot size vs. the pen's rated tip width.

  • Let felt-tip pens "warm up" with a few dots on scrap before starting a section; the first few dots after capping are often uneven.

  • Use archival/pigment ink (not dye-based) for anything meant to last — dye ink fades significantly under UV within a few years.

  • Keep a fixed light source and step back frequently (every 30–60 min) to check value/density from real viewing distance — density errors are invisible up close and obvious from a few meters away.

Modern Pointillism: Ink Pen Techniques

1. Pen types and what they're good for

Fineliners / technical pigment pens (Sakura Pigma Micron, Copic Multiliner, Staedtler pigment liner, Faber-Castell PITT artist pen)

  • Archival, waterproof, lightfast pigment ink — won't fade or smear over time

  • Come in fixed tip sizes: 005 (~0.2mm), 01 (~0.25mm), 03 (~0.35mm), 05 (~0.45mm), 08 (~0.5mm)

  • Best for fine, consistent dots — the standard choice for detailed stippling

  • A 0.32mm dot target lines up almost exactly with a 01–03 tip

Refillable technical/drafting pens (Rotring Rapidograph, Koh-i-noor)

  • Same nib width every time since the ink flow is mechanical, not felt-tip wear

  • Better for very long projects — felt tips fray and widen after thousands of dots; a technical pen nib doesn't

  • Worth the investment at your scale (840×1200mm, millions of dots)

Gel pens

  • More saturated, opaque color, including metallics and pastels

  • Ink pools slightly on contact, giving a rounder, slightly larger dot than fineliners

  • Good for adding vibrant accent color over a fineliner base

Brush pens / dual-tip markers

  • Pressure-sensitive tip lets you vary dot size within the same pen

  • Useful for backgrounds or areas where strict uniformity matters less

Paint pens (Posca, acrylic paint markers)

  • Opaque, sit on top of dark or colored paper/board

  • Larger tip sizes (0.7mm+) — better for underlayers or big-canvas background fill, not fine detail

2. Core technique

  • Hold perpendicular to the surface. Angled pens drag ink into a teardrop instead of a round dot.

  • Consistent contact, not pressure. Tap straight down and lift — don't press and drag. Speed of the tap matters more than force for dot size consistency.

  • Density carries value, not pen size. Classic pointillism controls light/dark and saturation by how close together the dots are, not by pressing harder. Sparse dots = lighter/desaturated; tightly packed dots = darker/more saturated.

  • Optical color mixing. Instead of premixing colors, lay down separate colored dots close together (e.g., blue + yellow dots to read as green from a distance). This is what gives pointillism its shimmer — mixed ink on the page looks duller than mixed color in the eye.

  • Work light to dark, sparse to dense. Establish the lightest base layer of dots first, then progressively fill in shadow and saturation zones. Reversing this (dense first) makes it hard to correct value.

3. Scaling up to 840mm × 1200mm

At ~11 million dots (hex-packed 0.32mm dots across that area), pure hand-stippling at that density is not realistically finishable by hand — for reference, even at a brisk 2 dots/second with no breaks, 11 million dots is ~1,500 hours of continuous dotting. Practical adaptations:

  • Tiered dot size. Use larger tips (0.5–0.8mm) for background/low-detail areas and reserve 0.2–0.3mm tips for focal points (faces, foreground objects). This cuts total dot count by an order of magnitude without a visible quality loss at viewing distance.

  • Digital planning pass. Map your reference image's value/color zones in software first (Procreate, Photoshop) — even a rough stippling filter preview — so you know where density needs to be high vs. low before you start inking. This avoids wasted dots and over-correction.

  • Section-based grid. Lightly pencil (or laser-project) a low-opacity grid onto the substrate and work one section at a time to keep density and color balance consistent across such a large surface.

  • Mixed media base. A sprayed or airbrushed underpainting for broad value/color zones, with ink-pen stippling reserved for edges, texture, and detail, is how most large-scale modern pointillism pieces are actually produced — pure hand-dotting at full density is rare outside gallery-scale, multi-month commissions.

I do not hurry the paper. Ink moves only at the speed of breathing. Each dot is a moment, and together they become the rhythm of memory.
